Academic Honors

Honors Program

Emory’s Honors Program allows students to engage in intensive work and research in a chosen area of study. Most of Emory’s major programs have an honors component.

Students must possess a 3.5 GPA at the end of their junior year to be eligible, except in cases where the department grants a waiver. Students may pursue honors for only one major or co-major.

Requirements for honors vary by department, but all students should expect a written or oral exam upon satisfactory completion of the program, with a minimum 3.5 GPA need to graduate with honors (cum laude).

Awards and Honors

A list of academic scholarships and graduation honors can be found here.

Dean’s List

The Dean’s List at Emory recognizes students in the top 20 percent of their class by semester GPA.

Academic Awards and Fellowships

Emory students have received a number of nationally competitive academic awards and scholarships including Rhodes, Fulbright, Mellon, Truman, and Marshall scholarships that offer opportunities for graduate study and research abroad and in the United States, funding the graduate students, and opportunities for postgraduate work or internships. A full list of awards is available, along with descriptions and deadlines for each.

Honor Societies at Emory College

In addition to national honor societies such as Phi Beta Kappa, some 17 academic departments at Emory College have honor societies that recognize outstanding student achievement. Other Emory-specific societies include Ducemus, DVS Senior Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Paladin Society.

Oxford College Academic Honors

In addition to the honor list (3.5 GPA or better) and the Merit List (3.0 GPA or better), Oxford College has two honor societies to which its students can aspire: Alpha Epsilon Upsilon, which promotes academic excellence, and Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for first-year students with outstanding GPAs.

Goizueta BBA Honors and Awards

Undergraduate business students whose work in school has been particularly stellar will be granted BBA degrees with distinction at Goizueta Business School, depending on their final class rank. Goizueta undergraduates with high GPAs are also honored with inclusion on the Dean’s List and in Beta Gamma Sigma, a national honor society for students of business and management.

Nursing Honors

Sigma Theta Tau is the international honor society for nursing, which recognizes leadership, high achievement and professional standards, and creative work among BSN students. The chapter at Emory is very active and has a number of scheduled events throughout the year.
